Google Search Box Vanishing from Omnibar Searches in Chrome Dev

Like many people I use Google Chrome’s omnibar/address bar/URL spot to make my Google searches.

It’s quicker than heading over to itself because it’s always there, always ready.

But lately I’ve noticed that searches made from the omnibar are behaving a bit differently in Chrome OS Dev: the Google Search results page no longer shows a search box on the page.

Instead your search term remains in the omnibar, badged by ‘Google Search’.

As with anything that happens in the Dev channel there’s no guarantee that this behaviour is staying, but for now it’s something to be aware of if you’re also an omni-searcher like myself..

    Makes Sense.

    • I was literally thinking the exact same thing as I scrolled down to see the first comment (this one).

      +1 Seems to omit redundancies.

What happened to the black bar along the top too?

      I noticed that too.

Black bar will soon disappear and will be probably replaced by a button (similar to the app button in Chrome OS) just adjacent to your name in the right corner of the page.

It’s the best way to separate Google filters (images, shopping, etc) and apps (gmail, youtube, etc). Today everything is mixed in the black bar and it’s not really ergonomic.

That’s bullcrap, I like the black bar. It’s the only way I can go directly to YouTube search results without typing more crap. I don’t want to go to “videos” I want to go YouTube. I’ll punch someone if they get rid of the black bar.

This was reverted in Chrome OS. I don’t think they’re doing anything like this soon.

jeah, but on my Chrome browser, it still gets rid of the black bar in the search results. Only way to get it back is to go to and search from there.

Old news. I noticed the lack of a search box coupe of weeks ago.

  • mirek2

Will there be a way for other search providers to plug into this?

    • That is what I am wondering also.

    • What other search providers do you use?

    • Wetware

unless chrome makes a call telling the search sites they don’t need to show search bars, no.

  • I guess this won’t apply if you don’t use Google for searches :)

    • Wetware

the black bar is gone from the home and search pages, with the search bar at the top and the filters just beneath as the current.

  • IT’S SO ANNOYING. If I want to change my search query, I have to go to the omnibar instead of the now absent Google Search bar.

    • Virgil Q Staphbeard

I don’t find it annoying at all. Quite the contrary actually. Omnibar has became the search bar. Makes sense to me.

Well, try on a large screen 27″+ from a few feet back… you may sing a different tune.

  • Zac Pullen

Yeah – ok I get the idea – but what if you use omnibar search the term stays there but you want to copy the URL – how can the URL be displayed – or is that a dumb question?

How do I disable this option?
