How to Use Skype for Web in Google Chrome

Skype for Web beta is available to more users

Skype for Web beta is now available to more users

Skype for Web (beta) is now available to try without an invite, providing you’re in the US or the UK that is.

The browser-based version of Skype allows users to make voice and video calls without needing to install the main Skype desktop app. It works in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome on Windows or Safari on Mac OS X.

But the WebRTC plugin that handles the VoIP side of things is not yet available for Chrome OS or Linux.

It’s not all bad though; Skype’s instant messaging feature should (at some point) work on a Chromebook as it doesn’t require a plugin to function.

So why web and why now? Microsoft say they’re doing it “because the hundreds of millions of people […] told us they want to call and IM when they visit our website.”

“We know how critical it is for you to get to your conversations — and Skype for Web helps you get connected anytime.”

Skype for Web is now available worldwide.

How to Try Skype Web in Google Chrome

To try Skype for Web beta right now, in Chrome you need to be either the US or UK and have (or be willing to sign up for) a Skype account.

Then just dart over to in a new tab and sign in with your Skype login. Quick-ity-boo, you’ll be ready to send and receive instant messages with your Skype buddies.

To make a voice or video call you will need to install a plugin (you’ll be prompted to do this after signing in) but, as mentioned earlier, the plugin is only available for Windows and Mac OS X users.

Microsoft has also uploaded a ‘Skype Calling’ extension to the Chrome Web Store and will, on Windows, ask you to install it. It’s not instantly clear what this add-ons does but its permissions set implies it does more than let you click phone numbers online.

Let us know what you think

I’m not a heavy Skype user so I can’t attest to the quality of calls and video versus the standard desktop app. It works, which given the beta tag is pretty much all to be expected for now.

The service is available from today in the US and UK. Access for other countries is to roll out over the coming weeks.

If you try it out let us know what you think.

  • gdawilson

This is good news! I hope Microsoft will create a desktop version of this app for Chromebooks, instead of an online app!

    • Zak Taccardi

won’t happen. A chrome app for the website makes sense though.

    • James Bell

Yeah, on the platform that was meant to only use websites. Suddenly you need apps too.

      • gdawilson

There are apps that don’t require a browser being open, they’re called ‘desktop apps’. Are you familiar with them? if not, Google it ;)

        • James Bell

So, the entire purpose of Chrome OS, which is to move computing to the web, is being destroyed! Chrome OS is just becoming another operating system like Windows. Another operating system with significantly less programs and hardware compatibility.

  • Lewis

i already use the android skype app converted with ARCwelder and it works perfectly fine so until they bring out a dedicated chrome os version this will do fine.

    • freechelmi

      Great info!

  • Mi Pen

Pity the VoIP bit is still a work in progress for Chrome OS, but I can still use skype anyway with my Android phone app on my cheap smart phone. So not a huge problem right now.

  • jani jokela

i just got error when i try to install… the package is faulty icon 32

    • Michael Maune

I got the same, but the article says the Extension will only work on Windows Chrome. Havent’ tried it on my Windows machine yet.

      • An extension for a multi-platform browser that only works on one OS…. Microsoft you’re doing it wrong.

        • And what? The Hangouts app from Google is compatible only for Windows too.

          • Huh? I have it installed on my Chromebook right now.

          • Yeah, Windows and Chrome OS.
But on Linux and Mac OS it looks like this:

          • Ah. So it does work on all platforms, just not well. Skype doesn’t work on all platforms. Also, you can switch hangouts to windowed mode instead of transparent mode.

          • Maxime Bouveron

Actually now there’s a “Non-transparent UI” mode which is waaaaay better than the original one and works on all OS.

          • How old are those screenshots? I’ve been using the Hangouts app flawlessly on my Ubuntu 14.04/14.10/15.04 laptop for at least a year.

    • Drakonas

This means you have a Chromebook sir, but a Chromebook isn’t supported yet.

  • Michael Maune

Anybody else get this screen? I’m using an Acer C720 Chromebook.

I have installed it on my Chromebook Toshiba 2… everything works except sound, it looks like the mic is not working. The person that I am calling hears only whining!

          • Lewis

hi , toshiba 2 is the chromebook my brother uses and it is working fine for him , try removing it from chrome and re installing, if it is the same then maybe its the mic in your chromebook , does the mic work on other apps/sites?

          • zoran kovacic

Hello, I have tried hangouts and the mic is working so the problem is somewhere else. What did you meant whit removing it from chrome? I have reinstalled Skype several times (all versions of APK’s – 4.9, 5.1, 5.3, …)and also tried to powerwash chrome OS and nothing is working.

            Thanks for your reply.

          • Lewis

did you follow every detail of how to properly instal it fon the videos available on youtube ? search skype 4.9 runing on chromebook on youtube , other than that i do not know of why it would not work.

          • zoran kovacic

Yes I did, thanks you any way!

          • cecilia

skype “works” in that it starts up, you can log in, send texts but the audio is horrible. I followed your you tube instructions To THE LETTER

        • zoran kovacic

Does any one know how to fix this?

  • disqus_ohBzTkihC2

Sorry, Skype for Web (Beta) isn’t available on this device yet.
Please try it on your desktop computer instead.

Thats the message i got in my lenovo n21 chromebook

    • AFAIK, doesn’t work on any Chromebooks as of now.

  • This is extremely annoying. It only works on OS X and Windows. Won’t work on my linux machine or chromebook.

  • Jordana Sinclair

Sorry, Skype for Web (Beta) isn’t available on this device yet.

I get this on Samsung Chromebook (the arm based one).

    which is so annoying!

    • Doesn’t work on any Chromebooks AFAIK as of now.

  • Eddie Webb

For everyone who got the skype for web isn’t available on this device yet, search a user agent switcher in the chrome store then switch to skype for windows

  • Vin

This would be great and be a real selling point with my wife because we live far apart for work reasons. Right now, I Skype with her on my Android tablet and she uses her PC. Google Hangouts wasn’t working for her very well and was annoying because my Andorid phone would be getting my Hangouts call instead of my tablet. With Skype for Chrome, my wife would be much more receptive of owning a Chromebook (the only computer I use) and we can be more fully integrated in our Google/Chrome environment.

  • Rowdy Scarlett

I use skype on my android phone for a couple of people I know in the UK that use it. The call quality is very good and I do miss using it since moving from windows to chrome os. Love hangouts, but can’t get everyone to use it.

    • Cihat Kaya

Same here :) My firends have android phones but they don’t know that they even have hangout.
I think Google should do a better job at making flyers when u buy a android phone to handout explaining what hangout is.

  • freechelmi

A plugin for WebRTC? Then it is no webrtc

    • Heimen Stoffels

Sure it is. WebRTC is just a protocol which you can hook into with plugins to increase its functionality. Just like a browser is a browser but you can install plugins/extensions to increase the functionality.

Have you noticed any microphone distortion with this work-around? I did this, and now when I test the mike, I get a garbled sound. I hear the other party just fine…

      • D. W. Scott

        No problems with sound here

      • cecilia

yes, the sounds is horrible. I followed the you tube instructions several times to be sure I was doing it correctly and the sound is STILL horrible. And I used a Bluetooth headset which works just fine on the Chromebook (if I just use a basic audio recorder), and on other devices using skype. So it’s not MY hardware,

  • Microsoft let the Chrome & Linux users down again! You need a plugin -,-.. which is of-source not released for Linux, but only for Windows… ***

For all of you people saying that hangouts transparent mode does not work on linux:
It does. I use it and it works perfectly, just it takes a while to load.
