gmail pinned unread count
Small space, but well used!

A super short tip for Gmail power users among you who tend to keep the popular webmail service open in a pinned tab.

Now, the pinned tab icon (known as a ‘favicon’) you see with Gmail isn’t hugely informative normally. It just shows the familiar, red-accented Gmail envelope icon.

Nice enough, and tells you that it’s Gmail.

But do you think seeing an unread count in that teeny-tiny pixel-squeezed space be more useful?

If you do, here’s how you can an enable an unread count in pinned Gmail tabs on Chrome (and Mozilla Firefox):

enable advanced gmail unread message icon
Enable this option, that’s all!
  1. Open Gmail
  2. Go to Settings > Advanced
  3. Find “Unread message icon” in the list (it’s near the top)
  4. Check the radio button next to ‘enable’
  5. Hit ‘save changes’

That’s literally all there is to it. The tab will reload and, et voila, you’ll see an unread count!
