chromecast preview program
Want new features sooner?

Google has launched a new Chromecast Preview Program, letting brave users opt to receive new Chromecast firmware before it is rolled out publicly.

You might think of it as a ‘beta channel’ for the Chromecast. But Google say those who opt to participate in the program will get ‘production quality’ code.

“You’re simply getting earlier access to new features before they’re released broadly,” their help center explains in an article.

Why join?

Well, you get to try new features first, ahead of everyone else. You can provide feedback about anything new you see (like bugs or broken functionality) and share your ideas on things that you’d like to see Google add to the app/device.

All Chromecasts (1st and 2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio are eligible to join the Chromecast Preview Program.

Here’s how to join the Google Chromecast Preview Program

If you don’t already have it you’ll need to install the official Google Cast app from the Google Play Store (or the Apple App Store) before you can begin:

Once it’s installed be sure to connect your Chromecast to a TV and ensure that it’s switched on.

  1. Open the Google Cast app on your Android or iOS device
  2. Select the ‘Devices‘ tab
  3. Find your Chromecast (it needs to be turned on and discoverable)
  4. Tap the overflow menu, and select ‘Device Settings'
  5. Scroll down to and tap on ‘Preview Program‘¹
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to enroll

As soon as you agree to all the terms and conditions and okay your participation Google will send you a short welcome email with relevant links to support docs and bug reporting.

I Don’t See ‘Preview Program’ Option in the Cast App?

Google say that if you have the Google Cast app installed but do not see an option for the Preview Program it means they’re ‘not accepting new members at this time. Please continue to check back as opportunities become available.’
