Don’t like the new-look New Tab Page in Chrome? Unless Google relent on its removal, the following extension is as close as you’re going to get to having it back.

It’s called New Tab Reloadedand, until now, it was largely used by those wanting to use an alternative homepage as a ‘new tab’ item. But in the last few weeks it has become the refuge for those not keen on Google’s overhauled new tab page (NTP) or its omnipresent search bar.

The add-on tweaks the ‘instant extended’ version of the NTP to remove the search bar and enlarge the thumbnails to recreate the old, familiar look.

It’s not an exact replica, cautions the developer. This is down to “limitations [of] Google’s new design” . For example, a list of your recently closed pages, pages open on other devices, and quick access to Google ‘sign in’ are not supported.

All of that aside, it’s a faithful recreation of the speed dial.

New Tab Reloaded is a free add-on for Chrome with minimal permission requirements.
